About Laser Treatments

A broad spectrum of light is transmitted through a small, smooth, transparent handpiece which is gently placed over the skin. Cut-off filters in the handpiece change the wavelength range allowing it to be optimized for different applications and skin types. The light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by either the blood when treating vascular lesions or the melanin when treating pigmented lesions damaging them. The body's natural processes then remove the injured tissue giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance.

IPL Skin Treatments using Photorejuvenation often consist of full-face treatment or treatment of isolated body areas like the hands or chest. The treatment regimen typically consists of:

  • Four to six treatments administered at three week intervals
  • Broad spectrum light in the visible and near infrared range, from 585 nm up to about 650 nm

As a sub-epidermal procedure, IPL Skin Treatments using Photorejuvenation produce few side effects and requires little to no alteration in the patient's normal routine

This is intended to cause thermal and/or mechanical damage to a hair follicle while sparing surrounding tissues.

Keep yourself safe

Find out whether you'll be treated with a laser or IPL. Before undergoing any treatment, you must check it is safe for you to go ahead.

  • If you are pregnant or have any history of skin cancer, you should not undergo laser treatment.
  • If you have a heart condition, diabetes or history of skin problems you should consult your GP before considering treatment.
  • Consult your GP if you're regularly taking, vitamins or natural remedies such as St John's Wort.
  • Consult your GP if you're regularly taking medicines. Some drugs including acne medication such as Roaccutance, anti-depressants, contraceptives and prescription-strength Vitamin A preparations can cause complications with laser treatments.
  • If you're considering laser for the removal of moles you should consult your GP.
  • You should not have a tan - real or fake - before treatment or go out in the sun following laser treatments. Discuss this with your practitioner. One supplier of laser machines recommends that patients should not have been on a sun bed or have been sun bathing 30 days prior to treatment.

About Skin Type

burn time.  The burn time relates to natural skin colour and nationality.

The Fitzpatrick skin type of a client does not change.  Do not confuse Fitzpatrick with tan.

Your Fitzpatrick type is something you are born with and will die with, it does not change, but the degree of tan can change.

We need to know what Fitzpatrick skin type your pulsed light system or laser can treat easily without problems, and how you can alter machine settings, or what other things you can do to treat the darker more problematic skin types.  When to say “no” is also vitally important.  You will not be able to treat everybody and need to know when to refrain.
  • TYPE I: Highly sun-sensitive, always burns, never tans.
Example: Very pale Caucasian, freckles, or Albino
  • TYPE II: Very sun-sensitive, burns easily, tans minimally.
Example: Fair-skinned Caucasian
  • TYPE III: Sun-sensitive skin, sometimes burns, slowly tans to light brown.
Example: Darker Caucasian, European mix
  • TYPE IV: Minimally sun-sensitive, rarely burns, always tans to moderate brown.
Example: Mediterranean, European, Asian, Hispanic, Native American
  • TYPE V: Sun-insensitive skin, rarely burns, tans well.
Example: Hispanic, Afro-American, Middle Eastern
  • TYPE VI: Sun-insensitive, never burns, deeply pigmented.
Example: Afro-American, African, Middle Eastern

The Procedure

  1. Area to be treated is clip or shave area to leave a stuble.
  2. Layer of cold gel is applied to treatment area to help cool and penetration of light.
  3. Operator and patient wear protective goggles.
  4. Handpiece placed against your skin to begin treatment.
  5. Gel wiped off from skin after treatment.
    • Endpoints of treatment: Redness and swelling around the follicles.
  6. After treatment alovera gel will be applied to the treated area.

Advantages

  • Some consumers have experienced long-lasting hair removal or permanent hair reduction.
  • Safe if performed properly.
  • Large areas such as backs or legs can be treated.
  • Regrowth can come back lighter in color or finer in texture.
  • Light-skinned consumers with dark hair have the best results.

Disadvantages

  • Generally not as effective on unpigmented (gray) hairs and red or blonde hair.
  • Must be used very cautiously (if at all) on darker skin tones or on consumers who tan themselves
  • Improper treatment can cause burns, lesions, skin discoloration lasting several months, or patchy/patterned regrowth.
