Dermal Filler FAQ's
- At St Mellion Clinic Cornwall we can use dermal fillers to fill out lines and wrinkles around your mouth, eyes, nose and forehead.
- We can give your mouth a fuller and more sensuous form by enhancing the lips to produce a better definition and reduction in lipstick bleed.
- Your lips can also be given a greater volume and fuller appearance.
- Facial contouring - for example, cheek and chin dimples - can be achieved using dermal fillers to smooth out the hollows and alter the facial contour.
-
What are dermal fillers?
- A dermal filler is a substance which is injected into the skin to plump it up, make it firmer and smooth out lines and wrinkles.
- There are many types of dermal fillers on the market these days but SurgiCare only use synthetically produced non-animal products consisting of hyaluronic acid which is a natural chemical constituent of the skin. These products are far less likely to produce allergic reactions than old-fashioned dermal fillers such as collagen which is derived from cow hide. Newer products are available based on poly-acrylamide, and a new collagen-based product which lasts up to 12 months with far fewer allergic reactions.
- Are dermal fillers safe?
- The dermal fillers we use are extremely safe with a low incidence of allergic reaction. There is, however, a very small possibility of allergic reaction, which will be discussed with you when you visit your doctor consultant. You can expect some degree of redness and swelling after the treatment, which usually clears up within 1-2 days.
- Dermal fillers used at St mellion include Restylane Touch, Restylane, Restylane Perlane, Juvederm® 18, 24 & 30, Juvederm® 24HV and 30HV, and Radiesse.
- How are dermal fillers applied?
Dermal fillers are injected, usually without the need for local anaesthetic, into lines and wrinkles to plump them out. The dermal filler then remains in the skin, where it binds water to produce a lift and give firmness to the treated area.
- How long do dermal fillers take?
- A dermal filler treatment usually take around 30 minutes. For lip enhancement, a local anaesthetic injection is usually given to remove any discomfort.
-
How long do dermal fillers last?
- Typically, the results of dermal fillers can last six to nine months but this varies from one person to another. The filler is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body, so the lines, wrinkles or lips will ultimately return to their previous appearance without top up treatments.
- There are now some semi permanent or even permanent dermal fillers which produce long lasting results.
Restylane®
Restylane is the trade name for a specific formulation of non-animal sourced hyaluronic acid most commonly used for lip augmentation. Restylane has been approved for cosmetic injection into subdermal facial tissues.
Restylane is injected under wrinkles and aging lines of the face such as the nasolabial folds, melomental folds, "crow's feet" and forehead wrinkles.
It may also be used for filling aging-related facial hollows and "orbital troughs" (under and around the eyes).
The process has a fast recovery time of 2 to 3 days.
It is not permanent; reapplication is recommended approximately every six months.
A new way to use Restylane by "fern pattern" injection technique aims to restore dermal elasticity rather than to fill underneath the wrinkles.
